This is a good alternative to DMS. Noctalia is lighter on resources and v5 is already rock solid despite being in beta (10) official 5.01

It is possible we will have an official Noctalia image .

Just to be clear, it's Niri (wm) + Noctalia 5 (desktop shell) not just Noctalia 5.

I was not aware there was a Niri image already. Carry on. Nothing to see here.

I will eagerly await the Noctalia release when available. I will test the current Niri version in the meantime.

Noctalia runs fine on the RakuOs Niri image already.

Any instructions on how to remove DMS and enable Noctalia? I managed to install the latter with `rum` but I cannot remove the former. Also what about the config files?

To install Noctalia and disable DMS (changes spawn-at-startup in the config file) and to autostart with Noctalia:

rakuos-niri-shell noctalia

The config files are located in .local/state/noctalia and .config/niri but you can come a long way just using the GUI settings of Noctalia.

Thanks! I got it running. One thing, dankcalendar is part of the base image and cannot be uninstalled. I used my ehtusiastic assistant to disable the services and remove the app entries. I figure once the Niri+Noctalia oci image is out I can rebase to that and that detritus goes away.

I am happy to report that I have added a plugin to the Noctalia Community Plugin Repo for managing RakuOS updates Noctalia Style via rum. rakuos-software gui can be used as well. You can find it in the Community Plugin Repo under the name Rum Updates. Enjoy!

Not to diminish your effort but I couldn't really see the use of it. Left clicking opens up the RakuOS software simlar to the nofication already available. I thought more of an Arch update like notification service that opens up in terminal.

The same thing happens with Shelly in CachyOS. There is a Noctalia plugin to interface with it and it fits in with the "Noctalia Look". I prefer it to the app store approach. It uses rum to do all of the heavy lifting. It's completely optional. I have opened a feature request for rakuos-software-gtk to add a toggle for the tray and background processes.

Also, I don't know if the fix has been pushed, but rakuos-software-gtk is broken in the default niri configuration. The tray loads but blocks all subsequest windows from opening. Shutting the service completely down and starting manually works. I have filed a bug report about this. It is part of the reason that I made RUM Updater for Noctalia.

The default behavior is to run rakuos-software-gtk but with a single click it can run rum in the default terminal. You can even specify what terminal you want ot use.

For me clicking on your plug-in only opens RakuOS software with no other options.

Noctalia plugin settings are in the Plugins Panel of the Control Panel.

I would post an image but I cannot.

  1. Click on the Owl icon in the bar.
  2. Click on the gear icon. This brings up settings.
  3. Select Bar: Default.
  4. Click on the Widget List button. You will see the installed plugins.
  5. There is a gear icon next to RUM Updates. Click that and the plugin settings will appear.
  6. Go to "Click Action" can change it from Open RakuOS Software Center to Run rum system upgrade. You can specify the terminal if you don't want to use the default one.
  7. Close the panels and when you left click on the widget in the bar, a terminal window will open and ask you for your sudo password and proceed to run the rum updater.
  8. Right clicking on the widget will run a rum check-updates in the background.

I realize that that may be a lot for someone who is not familiar with the quirks inherent in Noctalia's design. I have changed the defaults to be the terminal update with the Software Center as a second choice.

Version 0.1.6 has been merged and should now default to updating via rum with rakuos-software as an alternate choice.

I will give it a go and see if it improves the use & aestetics (but needs some upgrades first). RakuOS software has changed the notification icon which is not to my liking.

Meanwhile I hide the RakuOS upgrade function in the bar in favor of your widget (and glyph of my own choice).

The next release of rakuos-software will feature a toggle in settings to enable/disable the system tray icon.
