RakuOS 2026.10.28 hotfix: a Hyprland ISO, repository fixes, drivers that find their builds, and Steam Deck-sized apps

October 28, 2026 · Announcements

This is a hotfix for the 2026.10.26 update. Most of it fixes problems with Terra and RPM Fusion and with installing the opt-in drivers. The Software Center, the Welcome app and the installer also now fit small screens. There is nothing to do after updating except reboot. And Hyprland now has its own ISO.

New: the Hyprland ISO

You can now install the Hyprland edition straight from its own ISO. Before, you had to install another edition and switch to Hyprland in RakuOS System. Download it from the download page.

The live session starts Hyprland with the Noctalia shell, logs you in automatically and opens the installer. It's built from the same Hyprland image you'd get by switching, so what you try live is what gets installed. Thanks to tofan79 for the Hyprland edition.

Next up: a gamescope ISO. The gamescope edition (Steam Gaming Mode) is the last one without its own ISO, and it's the next one we're building.

Terra and RPM Fusion

  • The Welcome app shows the real state. The Third-Party Repositories page always showed Terra and RPM Fusion as off when you opened it again, even when you had turned them on. Turning them on did work; the switches just didn't show it. They now show whether each repository is on.
  • Old repository files are cleaned up. Some older installs still had Terra and RPM Fusion repository files in /etc/yum.repos.d, with old settings that never got updated. At boot, RakuOS now removes them and turns back on the repositories they had on. The new copies are in /etc/rum.repos.d, where rum keeps your repository changes. Repositories that were off stay off. A file that turns on a repository RakuOS doesn't ship is left alone.
  • COSMIC extras from Terra. Terra now packages extra COSMIC applets and apps with us, and the COSMIC Welcome app says so. When Terra is on, rum installs, updates and removes Terra's packages for these. If you installed one from the RakuOS repository, rum replaces it with Terra's package:
Name you may knowTerra's package
cosmic-ext-applet-classic-menucosmic-ext-classic-menu
cosmic-ext-applet-fluxcosmic-ext-flux
cosmic-ext-applet-minimonminimon-applet
cosmic-ext-applet-package-updatercosmic-applet-package-updater

cosmic-ext-boardsboards
cosmic-ext-examineexamine
cosmic-ext-noctuanoctua-nightly
cosmic-ext-sniffnetsniffnet
cosmic-ext-calculatorcosmic-calculator

With Terra off, rum keeps using the other repositories for these. You can turn Terra on in the Welcome app or with sudo rum config-manager --set-enabled terra. More: Repositories.

Drivers find their builds

When a new driver build was published, or you had just turned on the repository a driver needs, the Drivers page in RakuOS System could fail with "nothing provides". That's because rum used its cached repository data until it expired. The Drivers page now fetches fresh repository data before it installs a driver.

rum kmod-upgrade does the same. It runs before every system update that brings a new kernel, so your drivers now move to the new kernel's builds even when those builds came out only shortly before the update. More: Drivers.

Apps that fit the Steam Deck

The Software Center, the Welcome app and the installer now fit small, scaled screens like the Steam Deck's (1280×800 at 150%). This works in all three versions (COSMIC, GTK and Qt). RakuOS System got the same fixes in 2026.10.26. Windows open no larger than the screen, and headers and buttons wrap instead of being cut off. Dialogs fit inside the window and scroll when they're too tall. In the GTK Software Center, the page switcher moves to the bottom of narrow windows.

The COSMIC Software Center is also built with the current libcosmic.

Other fixes

  • rum respects what installed packages conflict with or replace. For example, ntsync-autoload can no longer be installed over RakuOS's settings package, which already ships its configuration. Before, rum only checked this against packages in the repositories.
  • sshfs and other FUSE mounts in your home folder work with AppArmor. RakuOS homes live in /var/home, which AppArmor's profiles didn't recognise as home folders, so fusermount3 refused to mount there.
  • KDE and gamescope images: sssd's credential cache (sssd-kcm) now has the log file it needs. It's created at boot when it's missing.

On staging (RakuOS 45)

  • SSH keys ask for their passphrase once per session again. GNOME Keyring was also the session's SSH agent, and oo7, which replaced it, doesn't have one, so every ssh or git command asked for the passphrase. OpenSSH's ssh-agent now starts at login and keeps a key after its first use (thanks, John Holt). Unlike GNOME Keyring, it doesn't unlock keys with your login password, so you type the passphrase once. This is temporary until oo7 has its own SSH agent.

After updating

Reboot. If you turned on a driver's repository but the Drivers page said "nothing provides" for it, try the install again.

If anything goes wrong, pick the previous image in the GRUB menu, or run sudo bootc rollback and reboot. Then tell us on Discord or at rakuos.org/bugs, so we can fix it. For the full list of changes, see the 2026.10.28 changelog.
