Boot Menu and Recovery

Resetting Your Apps

When your installed packages get into a bad state, you can rebuild them. Both resets only affect the RPM packages you installed with rum or the Software Center. Your files, settings, Flatpaks and the rest of the system are not touched.

Try more targeted fixes first (see Common problems), and back up your package list before either reset:

cp /var/lib/rakuos/packages.list ~/packages.list.bak

Soft reset

Removes your installed packages and installs the same list again, fresh.

sudo rakuos reset-overlay --soft

It first downloads every package on your list. If any can't be downloaded, it stops with "Soft reset aborted — nothing has been changed."; fix that package (or remove it with sudo rum remove) and try again. Otherwise it says "RakuOS: soft reset scheduled.", and the reset happens at the next reboot. That boot reinstalls everything ("Installing user applications…") and needs the network.

Full reset

Removes your installed packages and your package list, back to the image's own packages. It can't be undone.

sudo rakuos reset-overlay --confirm

The reset happens at the next reboot. Reinstall what you need afterwards from your backup with sudo rum install.

In RakuOS System

The Overlay page lists your installed packages and has:

  • Export List…: save your list to a file. Do this before any reset.
  • Import List…: install every package in a list file.
  • Reset Overlay…: "Soft Reset (Rebuild)" or "Full Reset (Stock)".

Missing files after an update

If a package shows as installed but its files are missing after an update (command not found, while rum list --base | grep <name> or rum list | grep <name> shows it's installed), try this before a reset:

sudo rum restore-base-files <package> --dry-run # shows what's hidden
sudo rum restore-base-files <package> # puts the files back
